The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has officially called off the doctors’ strike in Kiambu County following the signing of a Return-to-Work Formula (RTWF) with the County Government of Kiambu and the County Public Service Board.
The deal, brokered by the Council of Governors (CoG), ends a 151-day stalemate that had paralysed healthcare services across the county.
Key provisions of the agreement include the immediate payment of one month’s salary, with outstanding arrears to be cleared in phases, the remittance of KMPDU monthly deductions, and the processing of doctors’ promotions and pending re-designations in line with existing schemes of service. Both parties also agreed that no doctor will face victimisation for participating in the industrial action.
The consultative meeting was chaired by CoG Whip and Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki, alongside CoG Health Committee Chair and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, and attended by Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi and KMPDU officials.
KMPDU Secretary General Dr. Davji Bhimji Atellah was commended for his steadfast leadership and constructive engagement throughout the negotiations, which helped strike a balance between doctors’ welfare and the restoration of healthcare services.
The signing of the Return-to-Work Formula now clears the way for the full resumption of medical services across Kiambu County, bringing relief to thousands of residents who had been affected by the prolonged strike.
