Nairobi MCAs Dismiss Super Metro Claims of Bribery and Poor Hygiene

A section of Nairobi Members of County Assembly (MCAs) have rallied in defense of Super Metro Sacco, which has recently faced allegations of corruption, a passenger’s murder by its staff, and substandard vehicle cleanliness.

Led by Nairobi CBD MCA Kwenya Mwaniki, the legislators condemned what they described as extortion attempts by certain politicians under the guise of oversight. The MCAs dismissed claims that the sacco’s vehicles were infested with cockroaches and bedbugs due to a lack of fumigation.

“It is alleged that Super Metro does not fumigate its vehicles and that pests are a common sight. However, my colleagues and I have personally inspected the vehicles operating on routes to Westlands and Kikuyu. Let me state categorically that this is the cleanest matatu service I have seen in town today,” Mwaniki asserted.

The MCAs also dismissed allegations that Super Metro had bribed the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to maintain operations, emphasizing that the sacco resumed business after securing a court order that overturned the NTSA’s suspension.

Instead of targeting business operators, Mwaniki urged politicians to focus on improving infrastructure for public transport users. “Passengers wait in long queues under harsh weather conditions. We should be advocating for shaded waiting areas and accessible pathways for persons living with disabilities, rather than stifling these entrepreneurs,” he added.

Pangani MCA Peter Wahinya echoed these sentiments, calling on fellow leaders to protect businesses and create a conducive environment for all stakeholders in Nairobi’s transport sector.

Super Metro’s license was suspended by NTSA to ensure the sacco implemented safety measures to protect passengers and road users. However, the company contested the suspension, arguing that NTSA had not issued prior notice of any charges related to accidents between January and March 2025.Super

The controversy surrounding Super Metro was heightened by an incident in which a passenger, Gilbert Thuo, allegedly fell from a moving matatu following a dispute over insufficient fare with the crew. The case remains under investigation as authorities seek to establish accountability.
