Ophthalmologist’s Memoir Shines Light on Resilience, Hope, and the Gift of Sight

By Njeri Irungu

Nairobi, Kenya – June 22, 2025 — For Dr. Jyotee Trivedy, a seasoned consultant ophthalmologist and Medical Director at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, restoring vision is more than a profession—it is a mission of compassion, resilience, and unwavering hope. With over two decades of experience treating patients from all walks of life, Dr. Trivedy has now turned the lens inward, chronicling her personal and professional journey in an inspiring new book.

Speaking candidly about the inspiration behind the memoir, Dr. Trivedy described the many roles she has juggled—daughter, wife, mother, doctor—and the struggles she has faced along the way. “Life brings ups and downs for everyone,” she said. “I wanted to share my story so that people who feel like giving up can find hope and keep going.”

Her experience with patients suffering from blindness—some completely without sight in both eyes—forms the emotional backbone of her narrative. “It breaks my heart when someone tells me, ‘Do something so I can see,’ and I know the technology just isn’t there yet,” she shared. “But I never let them lose hope, and I needed to say the same to others, too.”

Initially penned with the help of an African writer who sadly passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic, the book became a deeply personal project for Dr. Trivedy after she decided to write it herself. With no formal training in creative writing, she sought grammar coaching and spent nearly three years crafting the memoir while balancing the demands of her hospital duties and home life.

“I’ve written scientific papers and theses, but this was different,” she said. “I had to dig deep emotionally and rewrite the whole book after my first draft didn’t feel right.”

Dr. Trivedy hopes the memoir will resonate with readers facing setbacks, especially those who feel they have failed despite their best efforts. “No one truly fails in life,” she emphasized. “We all fall—like kids do when learning to run—but we rise again. We are all lifelong learners.”

The book also touches on the rapidly evolving world of artificial intelligence in medicine. While acknowledging AI’s growing role in eye surgeries—including robotic cataract procedures abroad—Dr. Trivedy is adamant that technology cannot replace the human touch.

“There’s nothing like the smile on a patient’s face the next morning when they tell you, ‘Doctor, I can see you today.’ That is my true reward.”

In a world increasingly driven by automation, Dr. Trivedy’s story stands as a powerful reminder that healing often begins with heart. Her book, expected to be released later this year, is not just a chronicle of a doctor’s life—it is a celebration of the enduring human spirit.
