KenGen Seals Strategic Partnerships with Nestlé Kenya and GGGI to Advance Green Growth

By Njeri Irungu

NAIROBI, August 27, 2025 — Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has signed two landmark cooperation agreements with Nestlé Kenya and the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), underscoring its commitment to driving Kenya’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.

The agreements, signed on Wednesday, bring together the private sector, knowledge institutions, and the energy industry in a joint effort to advance clean energy solutions and promote sustainable practices.

Speaking during the ceremony, KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, hailed the partnerships as a “historic moment” where diverse actors unite around a shared vision of sustainability.

“What makes today truly special is that we are celebrating two partnerships — a joint moment where the corporate world, through Nestlé Kenya, and the global policy and knowledge community, through the Global Green Growth Institute, come together with KenGen in one forum,” Eng. Njenga said. “This synergy speaks volumes about the kind of future we are building: greener, healthier, and sustainable for generations to come.”

KenGen, which currently boasts an installed capacity of 1,786 megawatts, with 90 percent sourced from clean and renewable energy, is positioning itself as a central player in Kenya’s green transition. Eng. Njenga emphasized that partnerships such as these are essential in sparking innovation, refreshing dialogue, and scaling up climate action.

The cooperation also sets the stage for the Second Edition of the KenGen Sustainable Energy Conference, scheduled for September 17–19, 2025, at the Olkaria Geothermal Spa in Naivasha. The event, themed “Renewable Energy for Sustainable Development”, is expected to convene over 500 participants including governments, investors, financiers, and development partners.

In this upcoming conference, Nestlé Kenya will serve as the Official Refreshment Partner, while GGGI assumes the role of Official Knowledge Partner.

Nestlé Kenya’s involvement will highlight its ongoing commitments to sustainability, from reducing carbon emissions to promoting circular packaging solutions. Eng. Njenga praised the multinational for energizing both the delegates and the dialogue.

On her part, Ms. Nagnouma Koné, Manager for Africa Strategy and Partnership and Head of the Kenya Office at GGGI, affirmed the institute’s readiness to anchor the conference with technical expertise and global best practices.

“As the Knowledge Partner, GGGI is committed to ensuring that this conference goes beyond discussions. We want it to become a platform for concrete commitments, bankable solutions, and long-term collaboration,” Ms. Koné said. “Kenya has already shown that clean energy is possible at scale, and with the right partnerships, it can become a model for Africa and the world.”

Eng. Njenga concluded by expressing gratitude to both Nestlé and GGGI for their collaboration, noting that the agreements represent a promise for Kenya’s green growth story to inspire Africa and beyond.

“Together, we are proving that sustainability is everyone’s business. Together, we are showing that when the privateH sector, public sector, and knowledge institutions unite, real progress becomes unstoppable,” he remarked.
