Kenya’s Deputy Ambassador to China, Lynette Mwende Ndile, was among the speakers at the recent High-Level Dialogue on the Beijing+30 Action Agenda, where countries reflected on the progress and challenges since the 1995 adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action on gender equality.
In her remarks, Ambassador Ndile noted that Kenya has made strides in advancing gender equality, particularly in increasing women’s representation in leadership and implementing supportive legal and policy frameworks. However, she acknowledged that significant work remains to fully close gender gaps.
“Kenya has made progress, but there is still ground to cover,” she said, adding that the journey toward equality continues to face social, cultural, and economic barriers that require sustained attention.
Ambassador Ndile also emphasized the importance of global partnerships in supporting national efforts. She highlighted China’s role as a development partner, noting that international cooperation has been instrumental in addressing some of the existing gaps.
Her sentiments were supported by Harriette Chiggai, Women’s Rights Advisor to the President of Kenya, who stressed that women’s economic empowerment is key to reducing poverty and driving long-term equality. Anne Wang’ombe, Principal Secretary at the Ministry of Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage, pointed out that Kenya’s partnerships with China are already opening up employment opportunities for women in several sectors.
The Kenyan delegation, while optimistic, offered a grounded perspective on the country’s progress. They acknowledged that despite improvements, issues such as gender-based violence, unequal pay, and limited access to opportunities still persist for many women and girls.
Ambassador Ndile’s participation in the dialogue signals Kenya’s continued engagement in global gender conversations, as well as the country’s recognition that advancing gender equality is an ongoing effort requiring collaboration both at home and internationally.
