Nairobi, Kenya – July 9, 2025:
The Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Kenya has issued a strong statement condemning the violence witnessed during the June and July 2025 protests, particularly expressing concern over the excessive use of force by law enforcement officers and the growing violations of human rights, especially those affecting women and children.
In the statement released on Tuesday, FIDA Kenya decried the alarming levels of brutality and repression exercised by security agencies in their handling of the demonstrations, which were sparked by growing discontent over the Finance Bill 2024 and deep-rooted socio-economic grievances.
“FIDA Kenya is gravely concerned by the wanton disregard for the rule of law, constitutional rights, and the sanctity of life,” the statement read. The organization noted that despite constitutional guarantees of peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and the right to protest, many Kenyans have faced violence, arbitrary arrests, and intimidation.
The women’s rights body further raised alarm over targeted gender-based violence, highlighting specific instances of sexual harassment and abuse of women protestors and female human rights defenders. “We have received reports of women being stripped, assaulted, and subjected to degrading treatment by officers meant to protect them,” the statement said, emphasizing that such conduct is not only unlawful but also retraumatizing and rooted in systemic gender oppression.
FIDA Kenya also extended solidarity to young people, especially Gen Z protesters, who have been at the forefront of the demonstrations. Commending their courage, the organization noted that their civic engagement marked a powerful moment in Kenya’s democratic journey.
Calling for immediate investigations, FIDA Kenya demanded that all perpetrators of human rights violations, including rogue police officers and state actors, be held accountable. The organization urged the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) and other relevant institutions to expedite probes and ensure justice for victims.
In closing, FIDA Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to defending human rights, amplifying women’s voices, and holding state institutions accountable. “We must collectively reclaim the soul of our nation and center justice, dignity, and equality in our governance,” the statement concluded.
