AAR Hospital has introduced specialized ear, nose, and throat (ENT) tests for newborns at its Kiambu Road facility, aiming to facilitate the early detection of hearing complications and related conditions.

The initiative involves comprehensive ENT examinations to identify structural anomalies or infections that could impact a baby’s breathing, feeding, or hearing. These tests include newborn hearing screenings using Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE) or Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) technology to diagnose potential hearing loss.
“These tests allow for early detection of congenital hearing loss and other ENT-related issues, which, if left untreated, could hinder speech, language development, and cognitive growth. Early intervention significantly enhances developmental outcomes and quality of life,” said Dr. Ian Macharia, an ENT specialist at AAR Hospital.
Statistics indicate that approximately 1 in every 1,000 newborns in Kenya experiences hearing loss, while ENT infections remain a leading cause of childhood morbidity. Limited access to early screening services has historically posed challenges, making AAR Hospital’s initiative a crucial step forward.
For cases where hearing loss is diagnosed, the hospital offers interventions such as hearing aids, cochlear implants, and early intervention programs. Middle ear infections, a common concern, are treated with antibiotics or minor surgical procedures like tympanostomy tube insertion. Structural anomalies, such as cleft palates or narrow ear canals, are referred for surgical or specialized care.
Dr. Wakonyo Gicheru, lead pediatrician at AAR Hospital, confirmed that the ENT tests will be standard for all newborns delivered at the hospital.
“Newborn screenings like OAE are simpler and more cost-effective. However, late diagnostics, such as ABR, are more complex and expensive,” Dr. Wakonyo noted.
In December, AAR Hospital launched specialist pediatric service clinics to address the rising demand for child healthcare. These clinics provide a wide range of services, including routine check-ups, vaccinations, and health screenings for children of all ages, aiming to promote early diagnosis and treatment of childhood illnesses.
As cases of congenital disorders, developmental delays, and childhood diseases continue to rise, the introduction of ENT tests underscores AAR Hospital’s commitment to improving long-term health outcomes through early intervention and specialized care.
