Free Eye Screening Camp Brings Hope to Nyayo Estate Residents

By Njeri wa Irunguh

Nairobi, Kenya, September 12, 2025 – More than 200 residents of Nyayo Estate and neighboring communities turned up for a free eye screening camp held yesterday at Malaika Park, Nyayo Estate, Embakasi.

The initiative, dubbed the Neglected Ophthalmic Diseases™ (NOD) Camp, was organized by DeckerMed Africa Trust in partnership with OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, City Eye Hospital, Little Rock Children’s Clinic, and the Nyayo Embakasi Residents Association (NERA).

The camp was part of DeckerMed Africa Trust’s ongoing mission to combat neglected ophthalmic diseases such as cataracts, refractive errors, and preventable blindness, conditions that continue to affect thousands of people in Eastlands and other low-income urban areas.

During the exercise, patients received free eye checkups, ready-to-read glasses, prescription glasses, sunglasses, allergy treatment, and referrals for surgery where necessary. City Eye Hospital supported the camp by providing both personnel and essential drugs, while Little Rock Children’s Clinic handled triage and wellness checks, including free blood pressure and blood glucose screening, alongside height, weight, and temperature measurements.

“We were able to see about 200 patients today. All this was done free of charge thanks to our partners, OneSight EssilorLuxottica, who provided the glasses, and City Eye Hospital, who offered drugs and personnel. Little Rock Children’s Clinic played a key role in triage and general wellness,” said Madelyne Albright, Camps Coordinator at DeckerMed Africa Trust.

Community leaders lauded the initiative for addressing a silent yet devastating health challenge. “We are happy to partner with DeckerMed Africa Trust to bring this camp home to Nyayo Estate. Prevention is always better than cure, and today we were able to give back to the community through wellness and eye care,” said Irene Nzioki, Founder of Little Rock Children’s Clinic.

Speaking at the event, Esther Baraga, Director of Development at DeckerMed Africa Trust, emphasized the importance of partnerships in tackling preventable blindness.
“At DeckerMed Africa Trust, we believe healthcare is a right, not a privilege. This camp is another step towards eliminating preventable blindness and giving back dignity to our communities. Our gratitude goes to the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation, whose contribution ensures that hundreds regain not only their sight but also their ability to learn, work, and live with dignity.”

Residents expressed gratitude for the services, many noting that high treatment costs often lock them out of access to eye care.

For DeckerMed Africa Trust, the camp is part of a broader effort to bring essential healthcare to underserved communities, particularly focusing on neglected women’s and ophthalmic diseases. The Trust continues to run outreach programs offering life-saving interventions in low-resource settings.
