The National Youth Service (NYS) and the Nairobi City Water & Sewerage Company Ltd. (NCWSC) have joined forces to bolster security and combat water theft in the capital. A recent training program at the NYS Technical Training Institute in Naivasha culminated in a Pass Out Parade, celebrating the graduation of 60 NCWSC security personnel.

The month-long intensive program equipped the security staff with crucial skills to address security challenges and safeguard water resources. The graduation ceremony was attended by key figures, including NCWSC Board Chairman Arnold Karanja, NYS Deputy Commandant General Nicholas Makoha, NYS Senior Deputy Commandant General Gilbert Maina, NCWSC Board Director Johnstone Mukabwa, and NCWSC Managing Director Nahason Muguna.

Addressing the graduates, Managing Director Nahason Muguna emphasized the program’s focus on practical skills.

“This training program equips security personnel with the knowledge to effectively handle various situations, ensuring the safety of staff and the public with key focus on threat identification, crisis communication, and emergency first aid,” he stated.

The partnership comes as NCWSC intensifies its efforts to curb illegal water connections and theft, a significant issue impacting water availability and revenue. This initiative aligns with Nairobi County Governor Arthur Johnson Sakaja’s manifesto, which emphasizes creating a “City of hope and dignity,” where essential services are protected and accessible.

The collaboration represents a strategic move by NCWSC to integrate robust security measures into its daily operations. The training program, which will eventually see 120 security staff graduate, is aimed at creating a more secure environment for both NCWSC employees and the public they serve.

James Mwangi, Public Relations and Communication Manager at Nairobi Water, highlighted the significance of the partnership.

“The partnership between NYS and NCWSC exemplifies the value of training in enhancing public safety and community resilience,” he explained.

He further noted that the skills acquired by the security personnel will play a vital role in protecting critical water infrastructure and ensuring the reliable delivery of water to Nairobi residents.

The collaboration marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges of water security and fostering a safer, more efficient water management system in the city.
