Poll: Embakasi North MP James Gakuya Favored Over Sakaja for Nairobi Governor

If Nairobi gubernatorial elections were held today, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya would emerge as the preferred candidate, according to a poll conducted by Microtrak Africa.

The survey revealed that Gakuya leads with 49% support among city residents, followed by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who garnered 40%. Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi ranked third with 5%, while incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja trailed with only 3% support.

Residents cited Gakuya’s advocacy for hawkers as a key reason for his popularity. He has consistently opposed the eviction of hawkers from the Central Business District and spoken out on issues of taxation, resonating with many city dwellers.

“Gakuya has stood up for the small traders who form the backbone of our city’s economy,” one respondent stated.

In contrast, Sakaja’s popularity appears to have declined, with many residents describing him as “arrogant” and “corrupt.” His policies, particularly the decision to restrict hawkers from the city center, have drawn criticism from various quarters.

The poll highlights a significant shift in public opinion, with voters showing a preference for leaders perceived as champions of grassroots issues over incumbents.
